I was A boy in the 1950s and 1960s, a time when spanking was far more often the disciplinary choice of parents. By the standards of that time, I would say that my parents were fairly typical. My father believed in the 3 Ds as he called them, that is, if you’re disobedient, dishonest or disrespectful, you could expect to be spanked. Of course, degree was always relevant. If I was told to do something and I dawdled, I didn’t necessarily get spanked. I would be admonished to do the thing I had been directed to do or get spanked, and so on.

>Was there anything that you could do to get a lesser
>punishment instead?

Usually, no. I certainly did my best to talk my way out of spankings, but once my parents had made up their mind that a spanking was deserved, I got spanked. There was nothing I could say or do that would alter that. My parents did not believe in debating me concerning my punishments. They decided and I got spanked.

>If you knew that a spanking was coming, did you try to
>get out of it?

Oh yes! Especially when I was younger I would plead not to be spanked. Later, I learned to lie to avoid spankings and that worked often enough that I became rather good at it. Lying, however, had the dramatic drawback of extra punishment if I were caught. Getting caught lying always meant a longer and harder spanking. It was a serious gamble. It was also very exciting because it upped the ante. As a boy, I was a risk taker. I loved risky behavior and the threat of a spanking was thrilling. I would do something that I knew would get me spanked if I were caught and if my parents started questioning me about my complicity, it was a hair raising experience trying to credibly lie my way out of trouble. If I succeeded, it was a tremendous relief. If I failed, it was a painful personal disaster.
