When I was going on five, I woke up and came down to breakfast excited because we were going to drive to the seashore that day and I had been looking forward to that for a long time.

But as soon as I entered our kitchen/dining-room, mommy spoke sharply to me as if I had done something wrong by coming through our doorway. Then when I sat down at our table she seemed to find fault with every little thing I did even though I wasn't doing anything different than usual. I can't remember anything specific she said because it made no sense to me at the time.

Finally she told me I was to go to my room and stay there as punishment for... I had no idea.

The prospect of being alone in my room felt immediately inviting to me because I would be away from Mommy and not being in trouble with her for no reason I could understand.

Unfortunately, I said aloud that I would like to go to my room. I wasn't sassing her. I was just a little girl guilelessly, matter of factly, saying just how I felt in that moment.

Mommy was furious and said she would give me something I WOULDN'T like. And quick as a wink I was off my chair and over her knee with my panties yanked down receiving a furious hard spanking from her.

Daddy was there but stayed out of all of this. I wonder if the two of them had had a quarrel earlier and he didn't want to tangle further with mommy, even when she was taking out her anger on her eldest daughter. (My sister was a baby and not old enough for formal spankings yet so I was her taking-it-out-on daughter).

Perhaps she was stressed out over her process of packing for our week at the shore. Or perhaps it was her hormones? Or both? I'll never know.

When we got to the cottage our family had rented for our week and had settled in, daddy got out his camera and took some pictures of me out on the screened-in porch while I pretended not to notice him. It had to have been at least 3 hours since my spanking, but in that photo my eyes were still red from having cried so hard earlier.

Decades later I even asked her about this but she said she didn't remember this incident. In fact, she claimed not to remember ANY of the spankings she gave me when I was little. I wasn't sure I believed her; I suspected she might have wanted to prevent the two of us from having an adult conversation about how she had disciplined me on that occasion and others. But there was nothing else I could say.
