Unless you had a really good reason sweetie. If you were my son and eleven years old and came home thirty minutes late from a friend's house. You might get spanked for that. Maybe not the first time, but definitely if it's something you'd made a habit of doing. If there was a good reason or you let me know you're going to be late and why, chances are you wouldn't get one.

I had a pretty strict curfew growing up. But if I let my parents know I was going to be late or had a really good reason I wouldn't get spanked.

When I was seventeen Mark took me to see Journey in concert as a birthday present. The concert was in a city and hour and a half away. Momma and Daddy let me go because they really liked Mark and trusted him. We did tell them we didn't know for sure if I would be back before my midnight curfew or not. They said it was ok and just to call them if something came up. It was about a quarter after eleven when the concert ended. So we figured we'd just be a little late and there wouldn't be any problem. Unfortunately things didn't work out that way. On the way home, Mark had to swerve to miss a deer that ran out into the road and we went off the road and hit a ditch. He tried to get the car out but it wouldn't budge. When we got out to look, there were pipes in the ditch and he hit one of them breaking a tie rod. Also, the front end was damaged. We didn't get hurt but the car wasn't going anywhere that night. It was raining and cold and we tried to flag down someone to help us and cellphones weren't as common then as they are now. We couldn't get anyone to stop, not even the State Police that passed us by. So we had to walk for over an hour to get to the nearest town. I was freaking out. Mark was trying his best to keep me calm and flag down a car but all I could think of was we were gonna be in so much trouble. Just outside of the nearest town was a little no name diner that was open 24 hours. Other than the waitress who's name was Marilyn and the Cook, we were the only people in there. Seeing how upset I was, she asked what was wrong. Mark told her we'd been in an accident and had to walk over an hour to get there. She asked if we were ok and he told her we weren't hurt but the car is stuck in a ditch and we can't get it out. I'm looking at the clock and seeing how late it is I'm starting to get frantic. I asked if we could use the phone to call home. She gave me change for the phone and I called. Daddy answered and as soon as I heard his voice I was crying and babbling. He kept asking if I was ok but I was panicking too much to give him a straight answer. Marilyn asked Mark who I was talking to and his and our names. The she came over and said, "Here let me talk to him." She said, "Is this Allen G.....? Yes sir, My name is Marilyn and I'm a waitress at ....... Diner on Highway...... You're little girl and her boyfriend are here. They've been in an accident up the road and had to walk here. No sir, they're both ok just cold, wet and pretty shaken up." You're gonna pick em up. It's about fourty-five minutes from your town and the quickest way to get his is take..." she gave him the rest of the directions. Then she turned to me and said, "Baby, your Momma wants to talk to you." I took the phone and thanked her and then said, "Momma I'm so sorry." she shushed me and asked if we were ok. I told her yes and apologized again and she told me "Baby Girl none of that matters as long as you two are alright." Then she said, "Your Daddy has just left to come get you two, and I'm gonna have to get off the phone and call Mark's parents to let them know what's going on, they're probably worried half to death right now." Then she said, "Stop worrying honey, everything's gonna be ok and I'll see you when you get home. I love you sweetie." I told her I loved her and then hung up and went back to the table with Mark. Marilyn warmed up our coffee and asked if we wanted something to eat. She told us the special of the night was chili and it was on the house. So she brought us both a bowl and it was spicy but probably the best I'd ever had. She talked with us off and on. Trying to keep the conversation light as possible, and introduced us to the Cook who was her husband. We finished eating and I switched seats in the boot to sit with Mark. I snuggled tight up against him and bless his heart he was doing his best to stay calm and be brave for me the whole time even though he was every bit as shaken up as I was. As I snuggled up with him I heard a voice saying, "Is this seat taken?" and when I looked up, it was Daddy smiling down at me. I yelled "DADDY!" Then jumped up and threw my arms around him starting to cry again. He held me tight and kissed my forehead saying, "Baby Girl it's gonna be alright." Then he looked at Mark as he stood up for the first time, he was really starting to look shaken up. Daddy said, "Are you ok Son." Mark was starting to stammer a little, he said, "Yes sir, then said, "I'm so sorry, and he started to cry." Daddy gave him a big hug and said, "Hey son, it's ok. All that matters is you and Sonya are alright." He called home to let Momma know he was there and we were alright, then Daddy sat down with us and had a cup of coffee while we had told him what happened and where the car was. He told us we'd go check on the car and then he would take us home. He also said, that Momma had called Mark's parents to let them know was going on and would call them back to let them know he was there with us and we were ok. When we got ready to go, Daddy asked how much we owed, and Marilyn told her it was on the house. So he gave her a fifty dollar tip and thanked her for taking care of us. She hugged Mark and me and told us she hoped we'd come back under better circumstances.

Daddy took us to where the car was and he went down in the ditch and looked things over. He came up and said, "This car ain't going anywhere tonight. Looks like it's got a busted tie rod and the front end is pretty messed up. Thank God you kids were strapped in when you hit the pipe." Then he put his arms around us and said, "Let's get on home kids." He drove us back while I cuddled up with Mark. When we got back to town, we took Mark home first, His Momma hugged us both crying and was happy we were ok, while my Daddy and his talked. Mark's Daddy said he'd get his friend to go with him tomorrow with a Roll Back to get the car. It was four in the morning when I finally got home and Momma met us at the door. I started to cry again and apologized. She just put her arms around me kissed me and said, "Hush now Baby Girl, I'm just thanking God you and Mark are alright." Then she told me, "Baby, you're soaking wet, lets get you out of these wet clothes and into bed."

So sometimes coming home late isn't just because you forgot the time or you wanted to push the envelope in some way. That's why with my kids, I try to make sure if they're late coming in whether there's a good reason or not before I decide what action to take if any.
