The first time, I was maybe 12 and my mom’s friend and her young son who was 5 were visiting us and they wound up being snowed in. What was initially supposed to be a two day visit turned into closer to a week. I was in the living room with the friend and her son and she was trying to get him to take some sort of liquid medicine, but he was having none of it and was pitching quite the tantrum. His mother asked him if he wanted a spanking, and at that point I left the room and went into my bedroom. I had a partial view into the living room and saw her yank his pants down and start spanking him. I didn’t watch, I went over and started playing the guitar.

The second time, I was in my mid 20s and was visiting my parents, who were babysitting my 9 year old niece. My niece back talked my mother and it was announced she would be spanked. My niece actually ran to me and I advised her to just do what she was told and it would be over quickly. My mom took her into my brother’s old bedroom and from where I was standing, I could have watched but I left before the situation progressed any further.

I somewhat regret that I did not try to intervene. My mom punished my brother and I with old fashioned bare bottomed over the knee spankings. That was normal for us, but I don’t believe my niece was accustomed to being punished that way. She seemed to me to be very scared. I should have tried to convince my mom to tell her parents what had happened and to let them deal with it. I don’t think it would have done any good, though but the effort would have been made.
