My parents gave two "kinds" of spankings. There were the "Attention Getters" (their term for it) and "real spankings".

The Attention Getter was usually given as a warning or reminder. It was usually nothing more than a quick smack on the butt over whatever clothing you had on at the time. When Momma or Daddy gave us an attention getter, it usually came with a warning of a trip to the restroom, car or a "real" spanking when we get home. In many cases, that was your final warning.

The REAL spankings were always given on the bare bottom. Momma gave most of our spankings, and usually spanked by hand, but for more serious matters or for repeated behaviors she would sometimes us her hairbrush instead of or on a few cases in addition to a spanking by hand. Daddy also spanked by hand, usually like ten to twelve swats on the bare butt. However, there were times like when he gave me my last spanking just three days after my eighteenth birthday because I was acting like a brat and being VERY disrespectful to my Momma. Instead of the ten to twelve he might normally give, he gave me twenty hard smacks on the bare butt with his hand and scolded me before, during and after the spanking, which is something else he didn't usually do.
