I had a teacher in Elementary School who used one of those type paddles. Yes it was used on me a couple of times. I don't really remember it hurting since it was over my jeans. It scared and embarrassed me much more than it hurt. Especially since she spanked me in front of the class. To hit hard enough to hurt over clothes with one of those paddles would likely end up breaking the paddle. But, I'd bet over underwear or a bare bottom, it would be enough to sting. The same would apply for those novelty paddles they sell in gift shops. The newer Fli-back paddles probably wouldn't be effective even bare since they are made of really thin plastic or compressed cardboard.

I remember one time when we were on vacation, there was a gift shop and it had the novelty paddles. There was one that had a picture of a little girl and boy surrounded by kids and a little poem about birthday spankings. I don't remember the poem but the picture I do remember. The girl was in a knee length dress with a ruffled slip under it and a sweater and the boy was standing there holding a small paddle and had his arm around her waist and she was leaning over. She had a shocked look on her face and the boy and other kids watching were all laughing. At my age then (almost seven) I was fascinated by the picture. Momma saw me holding and staring at it. The paddle itself was the same as the fli-back paddles but there was no ball and rubber band. Momma saw me holding staring at it and asked me, "What you looking at Baby?" I felt a little embarrassed and showed her the paddle. She took it and looked at it and read the poem out loud. She laughed and gave me a playful pop on the butt with it. Then said, "You have a birthday coming up honey, maybe Momma needs to buy this for you." I shook my head and rubbed my butt and said, "UH UHHH" She gave me a kiss on the head and hung the paddle up, and said, "I'm just teasing Baby Girl." then we continued shopping.

I ended up getting one of the fli-back paddles in my Christmas Stocking that year. It was never used as a real spanking implement but Romana and I did use it when we played house or school. We have a room in our Attic we call our "Treasure room" it's got keepsakes in it including old toys and the first Christmas Tree that Mark and I bought still set up and decorated. I think that old fli-back paddle may be in a chest that has some of my old toys in it.
