I strongly disliked being spanked, so in that sense it was an effective punishment. Spankings were painful, but most of all super embarrassing when I got into my teens. I don’t blame my parents for spanking me, they were never abusive or anything like that. But I think there are other ways to discipline your child, and I know many people who weren’t spanked who turned out just fine. So in that sense spanking is not really necessary
