Really it was the era and area we grew up in. Small town Kansas in the 1970s and 80s was a different world. As I said in my other post, what we got was harsh but we never felt abused. We (my wife and I) as parents, also moderated, we never spanked our kids in front of anyone and used just our hands and only spanked as a last resort.

There were times looking back where it was over the top. Grandmas especially were ones be avoided at all costs as they meant the mahogany hairbrush during cold weather months or a trip out the orchard in your birthday suit to cut switches in warm weather.
