Yes I can well believe everything you are saying, Rob! I suppose what happened with us, in the mid 1970s, was actually a much more mild example of what you were describing. I remember hearing, either first or second hand, how 'tough life was in the old days' in rural Lincolnshire from friends of my Auntie Joyce and Uncle Martin. How when they were kids in the 1950s and 1960s and were not at school, they could not, like us, spend most of the time playing and having fun - though we kids did have chores to do - but had to help out , not just on their parents farm, but on relatives and neighbours farms as well. They got no pocket money and treats for this either, just a meal at the end of the day and a bed for the night. Sometimes, as you described, if things got really tough, it might be thought better for them to go and live with either relatives and neighbours! And yes when it came to discipline they would be treated exactly the same as their (relatives and neighbours) own kids. Clips round the ear, a wallop round the head, a smack on the arse were part of the standard fare. But for more serious offences, or repeated ones, hidings, spankings and whippings were given as well. And some of these friends, neighbours and acquaintances, when describing their experiences, would relate how 'trousers would come down' or in the case of women, their 'dresses and skirts would be hitched up' and their backsides would be soundly dealt with. In some of the accounts given it would be made explicit that 'knickers and underpants' would be removed also. The lady up the road from us, who had two sons called Paul and Mark, on more than one occasion, told us that her own Father, who was incredibly strict, "would give her and her two brothers, really severe, long and painful, bare bottom spankings over his knees!" That "their bottoms would hurt for several days afterwards making sitting down difficult!" She said that she spanked her own two boys on their bare backsides but no where nearly as hard, severe or long as he had done to her and her brothers!

When hearing all these stories and accounts the subtext was regarding us kids "that we did not know how lucky we were!" and that "we did not know we were born!"
