When I grew up in the '50s and '60s you were to a very large extent at the mercy of adults! Child Protection Services and social services in general were nothing like they are today and attitudes to corporal punishment and spanking were very different also. For example, if you went running to the cops
complaining that you parents had given you a spanking or whupping they would most likely just laugh at you and tell you to behave if you wanted them (the whuppings and spankings) to stop. After all they spanked and whupped their own kids, as all 'good parents' did in those days. If you were really unlucky a cop, male or female, might even turn you over their knee and tan your hide themselves. I knew, and this is gospel truth, a couple of cops - a man and women - who handled a lot of minor delinquency and petty criminality themselves by, instead of involving the courts or juvie, administered spankings and paddlings to the offenders! And it proved a very successful deterrent and was widely supported by parents and lawmakers alike. Indeed, the offenders after having been spanked or paddled at the station or in the back of the police car would, upon being returned home, often get another spanking or whupping there! Even social workers, who whilst advocating more 'progressive' forms of discipline respected parental autonomy in matters of discipline and punishment. Some might even reluctantly admit that spanking had its uses and at times was justified. And then of course there was the care system itself. Although it was being modernised after the war with an emphasis on the 'cottage system' that is smaller units for the kids to live in (a movement away from the big and 'cold' orphanges) where they were looked after and cared for by 'House Aunties' corporal punishment and spankings remained an integral part of the system! Alongside this, regimes of very strict and at time cruel discipline continued, making the prospect of going into care a potentially frightening one! A female friend of my aunt assisted some of the 'House Aunties' in one of these new 'cottage system' homes and confirmed that things were not as cozy as they might sound! She stressed that this was an understatement! And of course living with a foster family was a real lottery, in itself!

Against this backdrop, Tammy, to answer your questions yes if an adult 'had it in for you' you were very often completely at their mercy! Kids with step parents often did not fare very well here! (Of course not all step parents were bad) And yes if somebody, 'an older lady' or anyone else, especially if they had some power or authority over you - and sometimes they did not even need that - wanted to bare your backside, put you over their knee/across your lap and give you A DAMNED GOOD SPANKING; then yes they could do that! Looking back now I would go as far to say that the United States, the South and the Mid West in particular but also America in general was a 'spankers paradise' from the end of the War through to the late '70s. And of course spanking and corporal punishment was widely endorsed, advocated, supported and encouraged by The Church!
