While that never happened to me, my Dad talked about one whipping he got from his dad. One of the neighbors from a nearby farm came to their house complaining about something my dad was supposed to have done on their property. I think he was accusing him of shooting his dog or something like that. Dad said he told him, "I didn't shoot your dog, I wasn't anywhere near your farm today." My grandfather asked him where he was and he said, "I was at the Miller Place with Lonnie stealing watermelons." About that time the neighbor's dog came running across the field. It turned out the dog had run off and he was claiming dad shot it. My grandfather told the neighbor, "For a dog that got shot and killed today, I'd say he's getting round pretty good." Then told the neighbor to keep it tied up before someone takes a mind to really shoot him." Dad said, he laughed as the old man dragged his dog back home. Then my grandfather said, "Now Rodney Paul, let's talk about the watermelons you stole." He took him out back to his woodshed and made him drop his pants and underwear as he took the strap he had hanging on the wall in there down. Then he made him lean over a saw horse and whipped his bare butt for stealing. He didn't go into any great detail about the whipping itself, but said, that's the only time his dad had ever whipped him.
