Sonya, spankings at home with the stick always left marks that lasted a few to several days. I saw them not just on me but on my siblings. I know that other kids who got the paddle also had bruising and, for some, the strap also left bottoms looking painful for days. Today it would be seen as abuse, but it was considered acceptable then. If you spank a bare bottom hard with hard wood, bruising is natural, but if the paddle isn't too heavy, the marks are not deep damage. Except for a little prolonged soreness when sitting, the pain is gone in hours, and the marks then look much worse than they feel.

Not everyone is the same. Your skin might not have marked easily. I know some adults who are spanked regularly who develop a resistance to bruising or even much redness, but say the spanking is just as painful regardless. It sounds like you were spanked hard enough to either, quickly in some cases, or eventually in others, learn the lessons you needed to learn.
