When Dad lectured any of us boys with intent of smacking us most the time he'd already fetched the yardstick from the garage. This probably emphasised how serious the behaviour was viewed.

A dining chair was easily on hand and was set next to a wall. When finished with a lecture the simple but stern words "Bend Over" meant bend over the back of that chair, hands holding the arms or palms on the seat
