I've actually had multiple roomates throughout my childhood. Five, every semester. (Well, not a completely different set every semester, but some room assignments did get changed at the end of each semester.

Vaneli was the one that annoyed me the most. For some reason everyone else thought he was my best friend. But I didn't really even like him. I didn't particularly dislike him either, he just had a way of annoying me. (Often) Like with how he was always getting into my clothes, and wearing them. "Stay out of my stuff, dude!"

Buchanan wasn't a terrible roommate, he just had a tendency to get up into other people's business. He always seemed to have the latest gossip before the rest of us, and was happy to share it. That said, it could be handy sometimes. He knew at least some details about everyone we went to school with, and some of the teachers. That kind of information could be put to use at times. But it was a nuisance when you're the subject of the gossip.

Archibald's most annoying attribute was snoring. Which when compared to the others, that's not so bad. He was also fairly intolerant of anything or anyone whom did not fit his ideas of what a person should be. Especially if it came to money. To be fair almost all the boys in the school were materialistic. Archibald had just really bought into the idea that wealth was a blessing from God, and if you didn't have it then you simply weren't godly. (But at least he didn't use that as an excuse to be nasty to other people. He just considered them beneath him.)

Finally Lester was the dirty one. Any Boy of that era is going to get in to some amount of filth. But there's only so much that we could get into at that school. Yet at the end of the day, his uniform was always dirty. He'd get holes in his clothes. And then there's the shower. Like with Vaneli and Petway from the other room (upstairs rooms shared the same shower room) Lester was uncircumcised. But what was gross was the fact that he would pee in the shower.

(That would not be as big a deal if we were showering separately, in a tub or something of that sort, but with our single room set up, and up to 12 boys, you could literally get peed on. That's NOT fun! Further, Vaneli liked to stand under the same shower head as me. He did pee once! I'm not ashamed to say that I yelled at him for that, and he never did it again.)

Oh yeah, and Lester once gave the whole dorm lice.

For the first month or so, the sixth bed in our room was empty, but eventually a new student was assigned to our room. Cox

Cox was the most normal of all the boys in that school, at least in the fact that he wasn't always trying to pretend that his family was more wealthy than it was. He was actually more along the kind of guy who minded his own business and avoided talking about his own background. I guess that was understandable, given where he came from.

For the next semester Vaneli and I were moved to dorm 3, though we still ended up in the same room. In fact it was also a room 2, (upstairs and to the right) like the previous semester.

So it turned out that Cox, Archibald, and Buchanan had lost 3 of their roommates, as Lester was moved to dorm 5. (The problem dorm. Sometimes we called that the bed-wetter dorm) Dorm 5 Was the one punishment you could get, and almost everyone considered that worse than the horse-stick... a LOT worse!

Vaneli was far more tolerable to share a room with during second semester. There were still a few personal space issues, and I still didn't like him much, but he'd stopped wearing my clothes, for the most part. (It helped that our drawers were no longer adjacent.) And we got four new roommates in Goffin, Fletcher, and a third boy that I often just call "Token" or "Tolkien" because I don't like using his real name.

(The following semester we would get Berry added to our room)

Tolkien was the most normal of those boys. He was also there on some sort of fund or scholarship. His parents couldn't afford to send him to that school if they wanted to. And I don't know exactly who paid for that fund, but I do know that Tolkien was often eager to prove himself, and prove that he belonged in that school.

Goffin... if I did have a best friend in that school, it might have been Goffin. For a long time I took to going home with him on the weekends. (if I didn't go to my own home, that is) But that was put a stop to, by his parents, towards the end of 8th grade, because I got caught making out with his sister.

Fletcher Wasn't too bad of a roommate. But he had the same issues that most of the other boys had. He thought money made him more important. He was also the most likely to keep us up later at night, but he wasn't as bad as Vaneli had been that first semester. (NOT by a long shot) Oh yeah, and he really had a problem with Tolkien. At the time, I thought that might have been a racism thing.

You get my point! If there's one thing I know a lot about, it's sharing a room with someone. And I've shared rooms with some of the most disgusting kids I've ever known.
