Your parents were certainly right to be concerned. Aside from lung damage and addiction, nicotine stunts children's growth.

But if I'd been your mother I wouldn't have spanked you. I would have sat you down and made you smoke until you got sick to your stomach. I believe that would have deterred you from cigarettes!

That does seem curious. Usually however someone was raised themselves seems "natural" to them when raising their own children.

Have you asked your parents about this?
