I agree with you. After a paddling, as I stood in one of the corners of the classroom, I was often admonished by the teacher to think about why I had been paddled. While I did my best to look as if I were contrite, I seem to recall that what most concerned me was trying to rub the fire out of the cheeks of my buttocks. After all, I usually knew exactly why I had been paddled. I was not stupid. I was recalcitrant.
