What we built in the basement some would call a Family Room, others might call a Recreation Room. We divided our basement into three rooms. One is the main room which we call the Family Room. It has quite a bit of seating. A large screen tv and home theater system, We keep a couple of game systems attached to that tv. There a dry bar with a pantry, a microwave and a refrigerator. There's also a table and chairs. We use it mainly for entertainment, but the kids will have their friends over and entertain there as well. We put a ping pong table in that room as well. There is a laundry room that is also used as a storage room and there is a bathroom as well that has a toilet, sink and a stand up shower. Since the floor is concrete we carpeted the Family Room. That room also serves as our storm shelter because during tornado season, the safest place to be is underground when the tornado warnings are announced. When the tornados struck throughout the South last week and a couple of weeks before, we ended up spending nights in the basement. Thank God, our community was lucky, we had a few power outages and downed trees here but not much structural damage. There were some communities that weren't as fortunate.

The Living Room on the ground floor has two recliners, a couch, a love seat and a television. We use it mainly to relax. We have an archway in there that goes to the Dining Room and Kitchen and a separate hallway that goes to the bedrooms and bathroom. The the Master Bedroom is the bedroom my husband and I have and has it's own half bath which has a toilet and sink. The other three bedrooms are a bit smaller and each of my kids have their own room. Our oldest has the larger of the three bedrooms obviously because he was our first born. Our younger son and daughter have the smaller two bedrooms.

The kitchen and dining room are about the same size as the living room. There is a door that goes out to the garage and double sliding doors that go to the patio out back. The stair way that goes to the basement is also in the Kitchen.

In many ways its very similar to the house I grew up in. It was built on a similar floor plan except, Momma and Daddy's basement had a laundry and utility room and storage rooms. It had a bathroom with a shower, sink and toilet. He never made a family room in there but the Storage Room doubled as a storm shelter. With beds a pantry and fridge, where we could go for tornado warnings. He also built a room onto the Garage where he had his Workshop. The attic instead of having vents had real windows and Daddy put in a wall up there. On one side was a storage room and on the other was Momma's sewing room. My sister and I would go up there with her sometimes and learn how to sew and quilt.

While the houses sound huge, they were basically four bedroom brick ranches with garage and a full basement. We are talking about fixing up the upstairs area more. The vents upstairs were replaced with real windows, and a real ceiling and floor have been put in. We are thinking about building out over the garage. To make a second patio over it and a door from the attic to get to it as well as stairs that will go from the patio out back to the garage. When we were talking about it the other day, I was picking on him a little and told him if we keep on building on we're gonna have to put in an elevator. He laughed and said, "I just might do that." I think he was joking, but I'm not exactly sure.

Sorry once again, I was going to answer a simple question but being the chatterbox I am, it's turned into a lot more. I hope I answered your questions, but if you have any other questions... Please ask.
