Sonya, reading about that Parenting Seminar you attended reminded me of a similar experience. Being a single parent, the my kids' school resource center urged me to attend a parenting class. So I did. The clown that conducted the seminar was pretty much like the one you described. "You don't spank your kids", "You don't fuss at them, give them time out, ground them, take their things away from them, yadda, yadda, yadda," Instead, you are supposed to sit down with them and explore their feelings. Or, you rely on Natural Consequences. He used pretty much the same examples that you mentioned. So I said, "You realize, when you send your kids to school, wearing the same dirty clothes everyday you know that CPS will be getting involved, right? He tried to convince me that wasn't true. Then I told him. "Buddy, with my job, I sometimes have to work with CPS and you sir, are giving out a lot of bad advice right now." Then I went on to say, "I guess if someone's child is playing in the street, instead of grabbing them, smacking their butt and making them get out of the street, you'd be in favor of the natural consequence of them getting hit by a car?" Before he could answer, I said, "Well buddy I was walking home from school when I was twelve, and got hit by a drunk driver in a pick up truck on the sidewalk. I spent seven months in the hospital with more than forty broken bones and internal injuries, spent ten days in a coma and almost died. So let me tell you this, a spanked butt will heal a whole lot faster than broken bones and internal injuries." Then I asked him, "How many kids do you have?" He told me, I don't don't have any, I'm not married." Then I said, "You are standing there giving parenting advice to PARENTS, with no practical experience? What makes you an authority on parenting?" He said, "Well I have degrees in," and I cut him off saying, "In other words you've got pieces of paper that show you completed the programs necessary to earn those degrees." "You have no experience dealing with kids at all, right?" He started stammering and I finally said, "You know, I had to hire a baby sitter so I could come here to get my name on a piece of paper to say I attended this nonsense. I'm leaving now because you have nothing to offer me or anybody else who is sitting here listening to your drivel." Then I got up and left, and several of the other parents got up and left when I did.
