Shirley Temple’s mother wanted to be a child star when she was a child, hence her training and promoting her daughter as a child star (Black 1988: 2).

When Jackie Coogan tried to collect the money which he had earned as a kid star, he discovered that most of it had been squandered by his mother and stepfather. As an adult, Coogan played Uncle Fester on The Addams Family. Two kid stars on the program were Ken Weatherwax as Pugsley and Lisa Loring as Wednesday. As a result of his own unpleasant memory, he made certain that the two kid stars were better provided (Cool Classics 2022).

Michael Jackson puzzled many people by trying to bless children with fun, fun, fun when most children are already blessed with fun, fun, fun. It so happens that Michael Jackson was one of those few children who were not. Rather, he was busy the whole time traveling with the Jackson Five.

And now for an example from popular fiction. When Batman was a child, he watched helplessly while his parents were killed. This motivates him to devote the rest of his life to fighting crime. During his noble career, he meets Robin, who likewise loses his parents to crime. So he adopts Robin and hires him as an assistant.

By now, you may see the pattern. In each example, an adult is wishing for the present generation of children those benefits which the adult had missed during his or her own childhood. This drive has been called “parental narcissism” (Ni 2016), “identity diffusion” (Erikson 1950), or “secondary narcissism” (Ruitenbeck 1967: 60-61).

At one time, this drive played an evolutionary function. It kept our species alive.

But now that times have changed, it could create some problems. One problem is the fact that our needs and interests are more diverse than in prehistoric times. That’s why we have parents imposing piano lessons on children who would rather have violin lessons or parents imposing football practice on children who would rather have basketball practice.

Another problem is that it could be overdone. Michael Jackson probably imposed fun, fun, fun on children who could have benefited more from some responsibility, responsibility, responsibility.

The whole time I was growing up, the only females who ever saw me nude were members of my immediate family. I was curious about what it even felt like to be nude outdoors.

I think I’ll run for President on the Secondary Narcissist ticket. If elected, I will ask Congress to pass an Amendment forbidding boys from wearing clothes. Then I will push for legislation making it illegal to publish an image depicting a boy wearing so much as a speedo.

Then I will set up a special police force. The police force will conduct raids all over the country. They will swarm the streets, the schools, and even the family homes. When they see a boy wearing so much as a speedo, they will rip all his clothes off. They will pour into any clothing stores. Any goods marketed for boys will be confiscated and burned.

No, just kidding. But I think you get the idea.

That’s MY reason for coming on this forum.
