When the recipient has gone past coherent talking and is gasping and choking on snot and tears. The redness needed for this varies with age; for the younger ones it only takes bringing it to a bright pink, but from about age 7 on, when we begin to use the strap after a warm up with the little paddle, their backside, from the top of their thighs to the small of their back, is the color of a ripe tomato.
