Hi, I'm married with two daughters 14 & 11 and one son who is 9. All receive spankings with my hand or the hairbrush. It's not uncommon for me to begin with my hand while I am still lecturing and then shift to the hairbrush to make sure my message is clear.

I watch for the child's reaction and the redness of their bottoms when deciding whether the punishment has been sufficient. It also depends on the offense that has been committed and the age of the child. When I began using the brush instead of just my hand, that reduced the length of their spankings. Like a lot of things about raising kids, maternal intuition plays the biggest part in knowing when to stop.
