Hey Y'all,
Hope you are all doing well. Maria moved in a few days ago and cooked us a lovely dinner last night. Things are moving along quite well here; man, I can't believe it's already June (can you believe that I typed "May" by accident).
So, here's a bit 'o info. Before I went on the camping trip I got a package of information from Japan, including pamphlets and letters. I looked at all of the pamphlets and even read up on the history of all of the temples in the area. I somehow overlooked a welcoming letter from my predecessor, Bobby Goddard, who wrote a long, detailed note describing the living/working situation over there. Anyway, he said that the apartment is a "good size"- bedroom, tatami room, kitchen, bathroom, corridor. He is leaving me a laptop (per Bd of Ed), tv, western-style bed, and a/c. Apparently the Bd of Ed is paying a quarter of my rent (apt is still pretty expensive) and supplying me with a bike, or as Bobby calls it, "a nifty little purple number". I teach at 4 different schools, a different one each day of the week! They are 10-30 min. away by bicycle. The area is tres rural-- mostly rice paddies and mountains. I guess the train only runs once an hour and even Nara-city is 2 hours away.
Living costs are very high... especially because I don't share bills with anyone else... but I think I won't subscribe to the "satellite" and use my time by painting instead. Actually, Brett suggested that I use the extra time to paint. What a splendid idea!
I have my would-be address as well... I will email it or send it individually because I don't know what kind of creeps may be lurking on this site!
Well, I hope y'all are doing well... let me know when you are planning to visit the area. It's our last chance to meet before I leave for a year... or two.

Love,
bumpa
