Subject: Greatest MAAC Conference Game.... ever????

Did you see in the CT Post that Manhattan AD called the 1st matchup between Stags and Manhattan as one of the Best MAAC games ever. Don't know if I agree, buts its great publicity that he said it. I also remember driving back that night, and listening to WCBS radio, and Gonzalez was on tape saying that the game rivaled the top Big East games as far as intensity and excitement...... got to like the Top MAAC team publicizing the MAAC.

"Certainly, it was an incredible game," Gonzalez said. "Our athletic director, Bob Byrnes, said it was one of the greatest conference games he's ever seen and maybe one of the top five games overall he's seen in 14 years. He thought it was an ESPN classic."

After this game I commented in this venue that this game was the kind of contest that those of us who were priviledged to watch F.U. hoops back in the sixties and seventies were accustomed to seeing. Without question, one of the best matchups I've seen in the league. I wish that I had a tape of this one.

Tonight promises to be more of the same. Two best teams in the MAAC. Packed houseful of crazies. Flores bombing. Gai rejecting. Coaches hyperventilating. Intensity levels blowing the lid off Draddy. And who does MSG have scheduled for tonight: Hofstra and George Mason. Sigh!

Anyone remember the big Holy Cross -Fairfield game in mid-70's? HC came in ranked highly, expecting a rout. Their team was so confident. It was a real horserace back and forth, but the Stags shocked them something like 122-101!

I remember the game, but it was for New England supremacy not the MAAC.

The first half was a classic and one of the best and most evenly played halves I have seen at any level. The refs murdered the second half by calling 38 fouls after calling 19 in the first half.

I remember the game well. It was 1978. Joe DeSantis and Mark Young's Junior Year. HC was ranked in the top twenty (12?). The loudest basketball game I ever attended. During one segment HC goes into a zone at the student end of Alumni Hall with their hands over their ears. It was that loud! There was very little defense played by either team and the shooting was unbelievable. It was an ECAC game not a MAAC. George Blaney was the coach for HC. In those days we had a great homecourt advantage due to fantastic student support.

The final score was 123-103 and Holy Cross was ranked 12th
in the country. I agree it was the loudest crowd noise I have ever experienced. The only other game I remember that approached that intensity was in 1975 when we upsetted nationally ranked Boston College 78-74 at a jammmed packed Alumni Hall.

I believe the score was 124-104, and HC was 14th.
