Subject: Finally some good news

Let's face it Baltimore basketball has sucked the last few years. I hope we can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. Morgan's hire of Butch Beard ($150,000 a year!), showed that they are willing to spend the $$$ in order to get a quality program. They will be in a few years. Beard turned around Howard (which was a mess and is now), and should do the same eventually at Morgan. It just won't happen overnight. By hiring him so late, he has little opportunity to bring in players.
TOWSON has signed two players already under Michael Hunt (6-2 Dunbar kid by the way of a Michigan C.C. Calvin Dotson and 6-9 center Tony Dixon). They are also expected to sign a 6-1 guard from Oxon Hill, Justin Reeves.
I really don't know how COPPIN will do, based on the fact that they are getting recruits from all over the country (they do lose Joe Brown). I think what they need is chemistry and a schedule that doesn't crush them so early. That will be a little easier considering they are in the Battle of Baltimore this year.
LOYOLA loses John Reimold, and continues to be a revolving door for basketball players. I've never seen anything like this in all my years of covering hoops. Remember Darren Kelly? He had a cup of coffee at Loyola, and now he may get drafted (2nd round?) in the NBA by way of Texas. Lamar Butler? Played at DePaul. Erik Cooper? Started at Rice. Hasheem Alexander? Was at American, but left school. Jason Rowe? I think may be in Europe. Let's hope Scott Hicks can keep more of these kids in school, because apparently (what else is new), he has a killer recruiting class coming in, which includes point guard Dennis Desmond, the expected starter at New Mexico State. I just love talking about Loyola basketball-the soap opera never ends.
UMBC: Another one that doesn't always know how to keep them, but they might be Charm City's best hope in 2002. With Peter Mulligan back from a world tour of Big East schools, along with Will McClurkin and Allegany signee Malik Wallace, there's not a better trio in Baltimore, and probably not in the NEC. Of course, with UMBC, the key always ends up being point guard play. I hope Isaac Brooks improves (like I'm hearing) and the Ron Yates (assuming he's back) point guard experiment is over. They do have some shooters along with Brooks in freshman Snyder and Gogerty and big but raw bodies in Eugene Young and Andrew Feeley.
Can't wait until Midnight Madness.
