I have a three year old gelding also! lol, but anyways! You must remember that 3 year olds are still babys and are still getting used to the new world. Poneys are a bit worse than horses, for they have different personalitys. Try to keep him in pasture run for a longer amount of time then you have him in his stall. That burns off extra energy. Or you can lunge him. I know its mud season, but it would keep both you and him safer on the trail. It sounds like he is full of spunk and spooking at small things is just an excuse for him to bounce around without listening to you. Instead of riding him down the drive way the first time, try walking him on a lead line. Let him inspect everthing that scares him, getting him used to different objects would certainly help now and in the show ring. All the while talk sootingly to him and calm his fears with treats and pets. Only after he is perfectly OK with the drive way, then you can get on him and work him. Keep him on a tight rein and give him soft signals, all the while keeping your body calm but responcive.
