I just saw Sideways last night with a friend. I remember this movie being shown only in World Exchange, then disappearing, then showing up at AMC because of Golden Globe nominations.
Both of us were disappointed with this movie. There's a reason it was only in World Exchange for a short time. I can't understand how it won any awards. (On the other hand, I love Election and indie films in general.)
First of all, I am not a wine connaisseur, so I was not familiar with the wine talk and I can't see the enjoyment of touring around Napa Valley just to sample. (But I love the scenery - yellow hills, mountains, ocean.)
Secondly, both characters are losers. One is a slimy pervert and the other schmuck totally opposes his friend's immoral activities, but never does anything to stop him. In fact he assists him, while looking gloomy and whining for two solid hours! Why didn't he just go back home alone when his friend took off, having sex with random women?
Plus, what's wrong with the women? Why would they be interested to date with either of the loser men? I don't see the attraction.
Finally: why on earth is the movie's name Sideways? We could not figure it out!
