there, my dear storm, you have hit upon the one thing that makes gargoyles so special.
it's the general theme of creatures of darkness vs. children of the night.
vampires, obviously, are creatures of darkness. thus sunlight kills them: they are safe only with the night. their entire quandary is keeping their humanity once they've been turned so they can eventually earn back their souls. of course, this proves difficult because once they have died their mortal death and are reborn as undead, they've lost their soul. makes things much easier for them to commit murder, drink human blood and drain the human soul. it's the whole hunger for food and need to regain their own lost soul.
for that vampire who gives in, redemption is lost. but for the neonate that doesn't surrender, that keeps their disguise and retains their humanity, they will eventually regain their soul. those are the rare vampires you see feeding off of animal blood, or only the human blood that's so kindly and generouly offered. and they never kill.

gargoyles, on the other hand, have souls. it isn't sunlight that turns them to stone because they have not forsaken daylight and all that's good. simply put, as children of the night they are restricted to living out their lives under the protective cloak of night.
in this case, night is safety and security, not a curse like it is for vampires.

the term 'creatures of darkness' implies more than simply running loose in the night. it's more the darkness of a malevolent nature. 'children of the night' is exactly that: creatures who's domain is night and shadows. i hope this clears things up a bit.
and if i'm starting to sound like a total smarty-pants and come across as full of myself, just let me know. i tend to get carried away very easily about topics that relate to gargoyles, magic, etc.
:0)

(ps. medeis, where are you?)
