Subject: Maycraft Boats???

A number of years ago I was looking into them and posted some questions on east coast boards. All the replies were positive but the best ones came form guys who owned Maycraft 19's and 23's.

Everyone who owned one loved E'm.

I talked to one of the guys at the plant and he also said those hulls are a cut above the others.

I've never fished a 19 but have two friends that bought 23's after some arm twisting.

Mike (MAX) bought a Maycraft 23 notched transom with a 175 Yammer.

That boat has the best ride of any boat I've been on period. It's extremely dry and glides over slop like it's not even there. You have to experience it to believe it. Outstanding boat!!!!

It was so good I convinced my other fishing buddy Norm (Bellybuster) to go for a ride on Mikes. After wads he sold his Parker and bought a full transom 23 with a bracket and 225 fuel injected Suzuki.

The motor on the bracket is less balanced setup and you end up with a slight up and down motion in head seas. Still it has an outstanding ride.

The boats are no frills and slightly rough around the edges. The consoles are great, the bait tanks not bad. Better then most but not as good as a high end Pacific edge. Construction is 100% roving no filler so they are light and strong.

The 23's hull weight is 2300 pounds. And some boats that would be a problem but Maycraft has come up with mod V shape that doesn't really pound but kind of cuts through waves.

It's all in the variable deadrise. They have a very sharp entry 27 degrees deadrise and a flatter transom 10 degrees deadrise. Check out their website and you can see how sharp the bows are compared to the sterns.

This allows them to absorb chop with the sharp bow and plane over it with the stern. They also sit very stable at rest, much better then your standard deep V's.

Honestly I've not seen anything like it with any other skiff.

With the light weight the economy is great. Norms boat burns 10 GPH at 29 knots cruise speed with a top speed of over 40 knots. That's 3mpg at almost 30 knots. Mikes gets about close to the same but his cruise speed is around 25 knots.

Norms Boat has the better mileage at troll with the EFI Suzuki.

You can't beat these boats. Both of my friends purchased theirs for lees then 25 grand. They trailer great, ride great, and get great millage. Just a good deal all around.

If tomorrow someone gave me a hundred grand then said go out and buy a boat off the shelf: I'd buy either a 19 or 23 Maycraft, pocket the rest, take off for a year, drive to Cabo and fish like crazy.

I may be an Aluminum boat nut but I know a good thing when I see one.

Good luck!!!

Hope this helps, Jim
