Subject: Single Engine vs. Twin Engine

Personally I'll always own twins.

You just can't beat the safety factor.

If I have a problem: any problem with one of my motors, I just shut it down and come in on one.

Effeciency is not bad with the right balance of motors. You can use smaller engines that are more efficient and still get decent speed and mileage.

Take for instance Orca Yachts 36 express. With two 5.9 Cummins diesels 300hp it has a range of 1000 miles at 30 Knots with a 500 gallon tank.

2 miles a gallon at thirty knots not bad for a 12,500 pound boat with a tower, and a huge tank filled with fuel.

My skiff gets 6 miles a gallon at cruise 16 knots, 4 miles a gallon at full throttle 21 knots, and a whopping 8 miles to gallon at twelve knots on one engine with the other outboard pulled out of the water.

Now I've got a small boat with twin 2 stroke sixteens, a thirty 2 stroke would give me maybe a little better milage at cruise but it can't beat the milage I get with one motor alone. Even if I switched to four strokes I'd still go with the small motors. I don't know what I'd get with twin Honda fifteens but I imagine it would be d@mn good

Several times I've run in on one when fuel got tight or I had a small problem. I also always troll with one, which saves fuel big time.

Basically the issue for me is safety. I know guys who've run in with mechanical problems: engine surging etc. and as far as I'm conerned that is unsafe, and asking for trouble long term mechanicaly. I'd much rather have twins, unless you develop a major fuel problem you'll never lose both at the same time.

Tight lines, Jim
