Gioi thieu voi cac ban film GAY cua Hong Kong
Lan Yu
(2001, Hong Kong)
Director: Kwan, Stanley
Starring: Hu Jun ; Liu Ye ; Su Jin
The prestige film this year, by way of positioning at nearly every major gay film festival, was Stanley Kwan's "Lan Yu."
This Hong Kong export lacks the in-the-face sensuality of "Y Tu Mama Tambien," the dynamic structure of "A.K.A.," or the genius of "Dahmer." What it does have going for it is its unsentimental adult take on finding love, running away from that love, and scurrying back to that love when you realize what you were running away from was yourself.
The year is 1988. The locale, Beijing. Lan Yu, our titular hero, has just arrived from the countryside, dirt poor, to study architecture. The dust of naïveté is, in fact, still clogging his pores.
So what can a cute, innocent lad with financial needs do to get some cash? Married, rich and middle-aged Chen Handong, the attractive son of a senior government official, comes to Lan Yu's rescue with cash and gifts. He just wants sex. Lan Yu wants more -- needs more. That's his problem.
Chen Handong's iron-clad philosophy is that "when people get to know each other, it's time to leave." And Lan Yu does leave after accidentally meeting another of Handong's sexmates.
But the two men's paths are destined to keep crossing, at times happily, at times tragically.
Well-acted and directed, "Lan Yu," which is based on an anonymously written novel published on the Internet, is a satisfying film about dissatisfied souls.
