Fleeing by Night
(2002, China)
Director: Li-Kong Hsu and Chi Yin
Starring: Rene Liu ; Lei Huang ; Chao-te Yin
In the mood for a beautifully realized love story that's operatic in its emotions, impassioned in its plot and truly aria-worthy in its finale? If so, flee to "Fleeing."
The locale is China. The decade is the '30s. Ing'er, the well-to-do daughter of a theater owner, is awaiting the return from America of her cello-playing fiancee, Shao-dung. The handsome chap, whom she hasn't seen since he was a lad, arrives with bow in hand ready for the taking.
Well, almost -- there's one slight obstacle. In her father's theater, the stunning actor Lin Chung is performing in the opera "Fleeing by Night." One glance at him and Shao-dung is aching to be in the star's presence. He's immediately consumed with the artist's presence, technique and soul.
The restrained Lin Chung gradually returns the admiration and falls madly in love with his fan. Since this is the '30s, both men use Ing'er as a cover so no suspicions will arise about their relationship.
The boys' ruse, of course, fails. First, because an extremely rich and cocky man wants Lin Chung for himself. And second, because the sadistic head of the company in which Lin Chung stars doesn't want to lose his main breadwinner.
So expect tears, angst, some fine lovemaking and terrific performances and cinematography. But also be prepared for a great tale of devotion that will break your heart if you have one.
