It was a fairly brave move on director James Ivory and producer Ismail Merchant's part to follow up their hit A Room with a View with this less popularly viable E.M. Forster adaptation. James Wilby plays the pedigreed protagonist whose public life in 1910s England constantly struggles against his private sexual inclinations. In the end, he abandons all in favor of love with a lower-class worker. Mounted with the duo's usual period decorousness and typically well acted (by a cast including Hugh Grant, Rupert Graves, Denholm Elliott, Billie Whitelaw, and Ben Kingsley), Maurice suffers nonetheless from faithfulness to its source material. While the gay theme may have been close to Forster's heart (close enough for him to hide the manuscript until after death), it did not occasion his finest literary hour. Earnest, admirable, but rather plodding, just like the book.
