I saw Joe Jackson at the Royal Festival Hall this Saturday. The consert was great but there was one thing that puzzled me and that was the spectators. I have been a Joe Jackson fan for about ten years. since I live in Sweden I have not had that many opportunities to see him live. I have actually just seen him once before, in Hamburg. So I was very anxious to see him now. My picture of a consert is that the spectators should be a part of the show and participate with the artist. Actually I think that even Joe Jackson himself, in his book says something about that, that the perfect show is when the spectators and the artist becomes one. So I was a bit surprised when the man next to me om the consert told me not to sing along in the songs. Maby Iīm a bit to young or not from the right social klass, but I think it feels a bit silly to sit down polite and listen to songs like Got the time etc. When Joe went of for the first time I think we were less then 10 persons that gave him standing ovationes. This strikt behaviour from the fans put the spirite down a bit. I donīt want to travel the whole way from Sweden to London to se one of my bigest favorites to be told to calmdown, I want to sing along and be happy. Maby Joe should play to different shows one for those who want to sit down calmly and watch and one for us who want to take part. Maby itīs better to se him somwhere els like in USA or Holland or maby I just don`t get it.

a bit dissepointed Joe fan!

John - I was at the show too (see my message before) and was similarly disappointed - at least during the upbeat numbers. When he played "You Can't Get What You Want" I was bopping away in my seat and singing along (in tune - I have a pretty good voice!) and was glared at by my neighbour, even though I could hear Joe above me.

I can understand maybe during the quieter numbers (like "Be Ny Number Two") people just want to listen, but c'mon everyone, Joe didn't write those faster songs so we could all sit there!! I even stood up to boogie for "Stranger Than Fiction" and really enjoyed a release of energy.

We are pretty staid as a nation John, but I remember the Big World, Blazy of Glory and Laughter & Lust tours and there was more life to those audiences in London (not so much on Night Music). Maybe we're just getting old - Personally I'm gonna be 19 forever...

John and Mark,
We were at the Manchester concert on Tuesday. We've never seen such a lot of miserable buggers in all our lives.
Is it Englishness, or is it the advance of years? Have we forgotten how to express our enjoyment or do we repress it because that's something that only our kids are allowed to do?
By the time the band returned for their encore we were bursting to stand up, and so we stomped along in our geriatric way through the next number. We too felt the looks of disapproval burning into our backs, but self-consciously rocked on regardless!
We were relieved to hear that you both felt disappointed that, despite the band giving us a uniquely entertaining night, the audience could not provide the essential finishing touch of excitement and exhilaration.

We're 46, we're English, but we ain't dead yet!!!!

I was at Joe's gig in Milan one month ago (feels like ages - sigh)and the audience was very warm. I did not see many singing along or dancing though, and I didn't sing or dance either, but I don't think it was because of 'restraint' or 'lack of excitement' . I don't know about other people as I went there alone and did not exchange opinions and impressions but, as for me, I stayed silent and quiet because I was completely annihilated by the Man's performance.... It was too much... I'll never get tired of saying how great Joe is, and who gives a fuck if any time I mention him, people say 'Who's he? Michael Jackson's brother?'He's much better than all the Jacksons put together (hope MJ's fans, if there are any here, will excuse me)
JJ rules OK!
