The fact that he hurt you back makes him a bastard in his own right, so he screwed up there, but chances are you will take him back if you aren't careful, many people in this kind of situation are like that. Where were your children when this happened? I'm sure this won't be one of the more thrilling memories in their lives and yes no matter what age it will result in problems for them. Get therapy for you and them. And you should be able to find a way to make him pay for the calls, after all, he made them and you specifically did not know of them. If not then.. uh.. *shrugs*
He's lying to you and himself when he says he can't help it, people who drink and smoke say the same damn thing.
I'm not the most compassionate right now, though I can tell you were my emotions not in an abject state that I feel for you and I'm only telling you this because I think it may help, although it is rather blunt. The best of luck and may things work out in better fortune. n_n
