Yeah, there are moments of ZIM where I just kind of sit and stare at the screen and wait for something to be funny. But then I didn't think everything in the comics was funny either, so I kind of expected that. (no, I don't think Jhonen's always funny, so shoot me.)

But I'll watch anyway, because I need new input, and if there is one thing that Jhonen IS good at, it's surprising me...giving me images and words I'd have never combined in just that way myself, sometimes even resulting in new ideas, or new takes on old ones. His stuff is always worth a look, just to see if the look was worth it.

All the merchandise though...that's another thing. I just don't want any of it that they've made so far. If they make something I like, I'll buy it, and if they don't, I won't. Support for whoever be damned. There's no need to buy something unless you really like it. If you do like it, then fuck the implications: get it.

Though I'll admit that the explosion of merchandising in general makes me worry. A year ago, I was looking at all the Powerpuff stuff plastered all over Target, and wondering if that was quite what Craig McCracken had in mind; wondering if seeing his creation everywhere he turned had divorced him from it in any way. And I wondered how I'd feel seeing Invader ZIM stuff in such profusion. (Kinda weird, I thought at the time. I'm still trying to figure out why.)

Now, Harry Potter stuff being all over the place, I kind of expected. The things they've come up with, I kind of wonder about, but it's a product of the modern era, you kind of expect the marketing goons to oversaturate every next big thing in order to make a few quick bucks.

No, what really fucked with my head was seeing Lord of the Rings toys at Burger King.

Nothing is sacred. Everything is a product. I guess there's really nothing left but to shut up and buy. I'm just not sure I like that.
