Jacket blurbs are pretty weak authority on which to base claims about scientific consensus - of which on this issue there is anything but. Even many religious thinkers are critical. See, e.g., the article at "Prescribing Prayer?
Researchers: Doctors Premature to Recommend Prayer" http://abcnews.go.com/sections/living/DailyNews/prayer000622.html (chaplains “troubled by the uncritical embrace of this trend by the general public, individual physicians, and American medical schools”). For a fuller analysis, see go to Sloan's article "Religion, Spirituality and Medicine" at http://www.pastoralreport.com/sloan.htm
