Howdy Jim;

I was with B Company, 2nd Mechanized Battalion ("Panthers"), 47th Infantry Regiment ("Raiders"), 9th Infantry Division ("Old Reliables"). Our battalion patch (which was worn on the left-breast pocket) displayed a black panther, but the insignia was never approved by the U.S. Army's Office of Heraldry. We had nothing to do with the 1st/69th Armor ("Black Panthers"). We were strictly mechanized infantry (no tanks, no dusters, just APCs). At the time, we were the only mechanized infantry battalion (out of 10 infantry battalions) in the 9th Infantry Division. Prior to 8/68, the 5th/60th was also mechanized, but they became dismounted infantry after that date.
