I would think that it may have been harder on those that had a girl friend, fiancée, or wife and children. In my case, I had got my dear john letter right after finishing my AIT training. I went AWOL back home, she did not want to see me, but her mother returned the set of engagement/wedding rings to me. Went to Nam a couple of months or so later. I believe it was the losing of my girl friend that caused me to put up my defenses and did not allow myself to become really close to anybody. In my 3 years in the Army, I was stationed at 6 different bases (Fort Campbell, Kentucky; Fort Eustis (sp), Virginia; Fort Benning, Georgia; Phu Loi, Viet Nam; Fort Stewart, Georgia; Germany) with the longest time being Viet Nam. At some point in here, I stopped saying Good Bye to people (just turned around and got on the plane).

Were you with the 1st Division, 1/26th Infantry Regiment in Viet Nam?
