Howdy Jim;

My first paycheck as a PVT (E-1) was $98 and some cents and that was in July, 1968. When I shipped out to Vietnam in Dec., 1968, I was a PFC and made out an allotment to my brother for $80/mo. for safe keeping which he spent (but he did pay it back later). After about a month in Vietnam, I was promoted to SP4 and was being paid approximately $250/mo. minus my allotment but including combat pay. I was promoted to SGT five days after leaving Vietnam and was then being paid about $400/mo. (without combat pay). How does that song go? You'll never get rich, you son of a b*tch; you're in the Army now!
