George, first of all, let me commend you for trying to help your friend and a fellow Vietnam veteran.

What I found through my own experience is that the DOA or the DOD can be helpful in obtaining and documenting records pertaining to one’s area’s of operation, daily reports, etc. As far as the Department of Veterans Affairs goes, it is the very department that will try to deny any compensation due a veteran.

I personally have almost 200% disabilities from PTSD, wounds and assorted AO related diseases that are still “popping” up. Having had the experience with the DAV (Disabled American Veterans) I’ve found them to be the most helpful, most experienced and an organization having gotten the most results. You will find that the majority of the DAV representatives are disabled veterans themselves and will always go that extra step to help anyone, whether disabled or not.

Depending on the situation there are many ways of getting the proper papers to the right person. I applied for disability compensation on the 12th of the month and by the 20th I was approved for 120% compensation . . . a total of 8 days! You, your friend or anyone else can feel free to contact me by email and I’d be happy to call you or give you my landline number to talk. . . . . . . . Pat (Beanie) Camunes . . . camunes@yahoo.com
