Jeff, I remember getting my first pay check in the army, it was just under $100 (do not remember if that was take home or gross pay).

If I remember right, you could get a carton of cigaretts in Viet Nam for $1.50 (no federal taxes in Viet Nam).

Another time, my take home pay was somewhere around $20 for the month, due to being fined and busted down from E4 to E1 for going AWOL (after receiving a dear john letter). Had to call home and get some money wired to me so I could buy an air plane ticket to go home on leave (got my orders to Viet Nam).

Beyond that, I do not remember much about what I was making while I was in the service. I was single, bed to sleep in, and a mess hall to eat in. Money did not seem to be a priority in my life back then.
