Hi Terry,

Thanks for your insight. You're absolutely right about people seeing things differently and experiencing things differently. Just as the past is now a part of who I am, I live in the present. More importantly, I've come to see life through the filter of my varied experiences. I’d like to think I’m a bit wiser, but that is not necessarily true of any of us old guys.

I do have some advantages: my personal beliefs (some would call it "religion") are immutable because I believe what God said in His Holy Word (the Bible). That’s what I stand upon and God’s words are what dictate how I should live my life.

It’s also true that I can't change the past, but I CAN learn from it. Not forgetting is part of the learning. Did you ever notice that history repeats itself? Good history students know that. It’s still true. In my opinion, the “lessons” of the Vietnam era are either forgotten or (worse) are willfully ignored by some with high political ambition. Unfortunately, it’s the troopies, the servicemen and women who must follow orders who are the ones who either benefit from true wisdom or suffer from foolishness handed down from those in power (or seeking power). I remember an expression from that era: "Mine is not to question why, mine is but to do or die." That is the soldier’s plight.

If we older ones (who are supposedly wiser) can help lighten a soldier’s burden by our wise choices, then God bless us. However, if our actions wind up hurting the troops, then the shame and responsibility is ours to bear. In addition, our inaction, i.e., failure to investigate and ferret out the truth and vote according to our consciences, will also bring shame upon us. We have to stay focused. Just because we’re getting older, doesn’t mean we can afford to slack off.

You bic? That’s funny. Yeah, I understand what you’re saying. Been a LONG time since I heard that one. With a straight face I’d usually tease back, “Toi khoung bic!” I often had the Vietnamese at our outposts guessing until the inevitable grin appeared on my face. Then they’d realize I was pulling their leg, and they’d grin right back and say, “GI bi dinky dau!” And I’d bob my head in agreement.

Semper fi,

Harry
