Subject: Note On PFC Blain

Howdy John;

The helicopter involved was an UH-1D (Huey) with a tail number of 66-16226 which I got from Mr. Bill Thomas' roster entry on the A/101st Avn. Bn. website. Mr. Bill Thomas appears to have been the crew chief (CE) onboard the aircraft. Contrary to the official cause of death for PFC Blain, I don't think that the helicopter actually crashed or if it did, then it suffered negligible damage. This is for several reasons: 1) The Vietnam Helicopter Pilots' Association (VHPA) lists PFC Blain as the only helicopter crew member who was KIA on 9/25/68 anywhere in Vietnam; 2) The VHPA has no accident report for UH-1D, # 66-16226 for any date; and 3) The website at http://www.a101avn.org/66-16226.htm says that this particular helicopter flew for 67 hours during the month of Sept., 1968, and for 80 hours during the following month of Oct., 1968. In fact, the helicopter survived the war and continued to fly until 1975. Try to get in touch with Mr. Bill Thomas through the A/101st Avn. Bn. website since he knows what really happened.

Thua Thien Province is the next province north of Quang Nam Province and it includes the old Imperial City of Hue (see http://www.nexus.net/~911gfx/mapne4816.html especially the 3rd and 4th maps from the left on the 1st row.) I think that the 101st Avn. Bn. was stationed at Phu Bai (about 10 Km. south of Hue) at the time, but I'm not sure. The other possibilities would be Camp Eagle or Camp Evans both of which were close to Hue and in Thua Thien Province. There's no way for me to know where the LZ was without a name or the military map coordinates of the place which is why I looking for an accident report in the first place.

Sorry, I can't find out anything else on PFC Matthews. I can't even find out where the G/2nd/7th Marines were operating during late Nov., 1968. However, their battalion headquarters was at Da Nang at that time.
