Howdy Brian;

I'm confused by the unit designation. The highest number for an infantry battalion that I have ever seen is 6 and the highest for an artillery battalion is 8. "3rd Battalion 38th Battalion" doesn't make sense. "3rd Bn., 38th Inf. Rgt." would make sense, but that unit hasn't been in combat since the Korean War. Also, the 38th Inf. Div. hasn't seen action since WW II.

It is possible that an Army battalion with a battalion number of 38 exists, but it wouldn't be a combat unit, and then, why specify "3rd Bn." in front of it? Although there were some Army units in Da Nang, most of the U.S. Military there were Marines, Air Force, and Navy Seabees. The highest battalion number for an USMC infantry battalion which served in Vietnam is 3 and the highest regimental number was in the high 20's. The USAF does not have battalions; they have squadrons instead. The USN does not have a rank of sergeant so even though there may have been a Navy Mobile Construction Battalion with a number of 38, there's a contradiction here too.

Do you see why I'm confused?
