Howdy Linda;

Your brother’s, PFC James Wilber Eldridge’s, Army Serial Number is US 55841848 (which means that he was drafted) and his MOS was 11B10 (Light Weapons Infantryman). He was born on 12/02/46 and his hometown of record is Nickerson, KS. His tour of duty in Vietnam commenced on 9/27/66 and he was assigned to A Company, 5th Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile). PFC Eldridge was KIA on 5/19/67 in Quang Ngai Province due to “Hostile, Ground Casualty, Gun, Small-Arms Fire”. His religious preference was Protestant (No Denomination), he was single, and his body was recovered.

Quang Ngai Province is in II Corps (the Central Highlands of South Vietnam). See http://www.nexus.net/~911gfx/mapnd4901.html for 1:250,000-scale maps of most of Quang Ngai Province (especially the bottom two). There were five other men from the same company who were KIA due to hostile causes in the same province and on the same day as PFC Eldridge. I think that they are all related to same incident. Their names are:

SGT John Thomas Fulford

PFC Juan Antonio Gonzalez

SSGT Bobby Vernon Hayslip

SP4 Guy Eckman Mc Nay, Jr.

SP4 Albert John Patrillo

In order to get in touch with someone who knew your brother in Vietnam, you could try contacting the guys of the 5th/7th Cav. Association at http://www.cav57.org/ . They don’t have a guestbook, but they do have an e-mail address posted. Also, you could try asking a Mr. Wilbur Bowe (bowe@chibardun.net ) since he left tributes to two of the above KIAs on the Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial Wall and appears to have been in the same platoon with them.

Since you are PFC Eldridge’s sister and qualify as next-of-kin, you may also request copies of your brother’s Army Personnel File and other official records and a replacement set of medals (if necessary) from the National Archives and Records Administration (see http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/get-service-records.html for particulars).
