Howdy Curt;

PFC George Botes' Marine Corps Serial Number is 2381625, he enlisted, and his MOS was 0311 (Rifleman). He was born on 8/12/49 and his hometown of record is La Grange, IL. His tour of duty in Vietnam commenced on 2/20/68 and he was assigned to Lima Company, 3rd Battalion, 27th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division. He was KIA on 5/19/68 in Quang Nam Province due to "Hostile, Ground Casualty, Gun, Small-Arms Fire". PFC Botes' religious preference was Protestant (No Denomination), he was single, and his body was recovered.

There is a tribute to PFC Botes on the Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Wall left by a buddy which says:

"Arthur Riordan
ariordan@juno.com
proud to have served with George
After having visited the 'Moving Wall' I feel compeled to leave a message to any of Georges family members. I shared many a fighting hole with George and was with him the day he was killed on Operation Allenbrook.As a fallen comarade his name and rememberance is always fully honored at the reunions of the 27th Marines.If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at my email address. Under subject please enter Georges name. Semper Fi, Art Riordan

It is fortunate that Mr. Arthur Riordan mentioned "Operation Allen Brook" because the answer to your question is yes. For a verbal account of Operation Allen Brook see http://www.allenaustin.net/oab.htm and for the official After Action Report of the 27th Marines see http://www.combatwife.net/allenbrook.htm . The later enables one to pinpoint the location more accurately than just "Quang Nam Province". For a 1:250,000-scale map of the appropriate area, see http://www.nexus.net/~911gfx/vietnam/maps/nd49-01/nd49_01c.html .

The 3rd/27th Marines crossed "Liberty Bridge" which is at the southern end of Road 540 across the Song Thu Bon. (They were probably coming from their base camp at An Hoa further to the south.) After the battalion crossed to the northern bank of the Song Thu Bon, they immediately turned east and drove toward the railroad tracks. On the morning of May 18th, they were at map coordinates AT958526 which would put them close to the village of Phu Tay (3) on the above map.

For more detailed information, you would have to contact the guys of L/3rd/27th Marines who were there at the time.
