Howdy Brian;

It looks like you got that information from a dog tag. Unfortunately, the POW Network at http://www.pownetwork.org/ does not list a Jesse F. Whitten as being an MIA or POW during the Vietnam era and their records are very complete and accurate. I checked the Coffelt KIA Database and there are 7 Whitten's but none with the first name of "Jesse".

The "US 56840909" sure looks like a valid U.S. Army Serial Number for a draftee. The "A POS" stands for "A Positive", i.e., his blood type. The "568605056" has got to be a Social Security Number (the U.S. Army started to phase out the use of Serial Numbers in favor of SSNs exclusively in early 1969). The inclusion of both numbers on the same dog tag has got to be rare or it might indicate a fake. (Some enterprising Vietnamese delight in manufacturing bogus G.I. dog tags and selling them to unsuspecting tourists.) The "Roman Catholic" is, of course, his religious preference, but I don't know if they would have spelled it out like that. It's possible though.

My dog tags said:

NORTHRIDGE JEFFREY E
RA 18865771
O POS
PROT NO DENOM

But then, I enlisted in June of 1968. Notice that there is no SSN included and my religious preference at the time was Protestant (No Denomination) which got drastically abbreviated.
