Howdy Betty;

What? Is the VA dragging its feet again? Usually, the VA only requires a copy of a veteran's DD-214 to get into the system somewhere in some capacity. SGT Richard J. Bashara's Army personnel file may have been burned up in the 1973 fire at the National Archives and Records Administration in St. Louis, but there's a good chance that his medical records will be held by the local VA regional office. Give NARA a little more time; they have other ways of reconstructing most of the information contained on a DD-214 like from orders for promotions, awards and decorations and Company Morning Reports, but it takes a lot of research.

It would be nice if you could specify SGT Bashara's unit down to the company level. By "52?, paratroopers", I think that you mean either the 1st or 2nd Battalion of the 502nd Parachute Infantry Regiment. The way it stands now, you will have to jump all the way up to the division level which reduces your chances of finding someone who knew SGT Bashara accordingly. The 101st Airborne Division Association is at http://www.screamingeagle.org/ and they have a guestbook where you can leave a message.

You could also try to get a Service Representative from a veterans' organization (like the American Legion, VFW, VVA, or DAV) to get involved in this case--they are very good at cutting through red tape.
