Howdy George;

First, so that everybody can get their bearings see http://www.nexus.net/~911gfx/vietnam/maps/nd49-09/nd49_09d.html for a 1:250,000-scale map of Qui Nhon, An Nhon, and Phu Cat Air Base. Now, for your first question, the 554th Engineer Company (Float Bridge) was part of the 39th Combat Engineer Battalion, 45th Engineer Group until 12/8/67 at which time it became a company in the 26th Combat Engineer Battalion, 23rd Infantry "Americal" Division and moved north to I Corps. However, the 19th Combat Engineers claim that various platoons of the 554th were attached to them during 1966 (see http://home.earthlink.net/~engr19/AttachUnits.htm ). There are some contradictions with respect to one of the 554th's KIAs, a PFC Roy Edward Shanklin, who was wounded in 1967 and died later (see http://www.virtualwall.org/ds/ShanklinRE01a.htm). Do you know anything about that?

Now, for the other question about Gene Kuentzler. Well, he wasn't KIA because I checked the Coffelt KIA Database on that. Your best bet is to ask the guys of the 19th Combat Engineers at their website (http://home.earthlink.net/~engr19/index.html). The 19th moved from Qui Nhon to Tam Quan in I Corps between 7/23/67 and 9/22/67. I don't know where Bong Son enters the picture.

For some photographs of Qui Nhon and environs see:

http://stripe.colorado.edu/~lines/vietnam.htm

That's the best that I can do (I didn't arrive in Vietnam until 12/8/68 and was stationed down in the Delta).
