Howdy Robert;

SFC David B. Owen's Army Serial Number is RA 13559037 and his MOS was 11B4H (Light Weapons Infantryman, but I don't know what the "H" stands for). He was born on 1/27/36 and his hometown of record is Juliustown, NJ. His tour of duty in Vietnam commenced on 8/2/67 and he was assigned to Advisory Team 99, MACV Advisors, MACV. He was KIA on 10/4/67 in Long An Province due to "Hostile, Ground Casualty, Gun, Small-Arms Fire." SFC Owen's religious preference was Methodist, he was married, and his body was recovered.

For 1:250,000-scale maps of Long An Province see http://www.nexus.net/~911gfx/mapnc4807.html especially the 2nd and 3rd on the 1st row. Most military operations were conducted on the east side of HWY 4 because the west side is the Plain of Reeds which is a swamp. Your father was most likely embedded with an ARVN unit and probably had little contact with U.S. forces in the area. The U.S. had military bases at Rach Kien, Ben Luc, Tan An (the provincial capitol), Tan Tru, and Binh Phuoc. I can't find a photograph of SFC Owen posted online and I can't find a website dedicated to Advisory Team 99.

Since you qualify as next-of-kin, you can request a copy of your father's personnel records and a set of replacement medals (if necessary) from the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). The military map coordinates of where the incident occured should be contained in the Company Morning Report which records the loss and which can also be requested from NARA.
